Our observation to the public consultation

The Committee has submitted a formal observation to the SEA consultation on the National Airports Plan 2026-2035 (procedure no. 8657, Italian Ministry for the Environment — MASE): we ask that Lazio's third airport be chosen through a transparent technical comparison in which Latina is assessed on its full merits.

What we ask

  • That the SEA identify, assess and compare the reasonable alternatives for the location — Latina, Frosinone, Viterbo, the zero option — as required by Directive 2001/42/EC.
  • A comparative feasibility study, on an equal-budget basis and with 100% of the technical work made public, with the results themselves put out to consultation.
  • Recognition that Latina is today the best choice for intermodality (~40 min from Rome, an already-existing site, lower environmental impact) — available now and without major new works.

Why Latina Airport

The reasons, consistent with the Plan's goals

Why the Pontine airport is the most rational choice for Lazio's third airport.

An already-existing infrastructure. The "Comani" site and runway are already there: lower costs and shorter timelines than a brand-new airport.

Connected to Rome in 35 minutes. Latina Scalo station is on the Rome–Naples line: rail-air intermodality, a key objective of the Plan.

Relieves Fiumicino and Ciampino. Ciampino has operational and environmental constraints; a third airport eases the Rome system.

A large catchment area. The Province of Latina, lower Lazio and the islands: a populous area today without a nearby airport.

Tourism. Circeo, Sperlonga, Gaeta, Ponza and Ventotene: significant, seasonal tourist demand.

Integrated networks. Integrated airport systems and intermodality are cornerstone principles of the new National Plan.

We are a currently informal committee of citizens who want to bring transparency and shared knowledge and historical memory, so that the Pontine airport infrastructure can open to civil aviation.

We work by collecting and organising documents and facts, and making them available to everyone in an open and verifiable way.
